Codex themes and skins
Learn what a Codex theme contains, why theme and skin refer to the same published format, and what Codex Skin can and cannot change.
A Codex theme is a published set of structured visual data and local images for supported areas of the Codex view in the ChatGPT desktop app. Codex Skin is the third-party product that catalogs, delivers, verifies, applies, and restores those themes.
People also call the result a Codex skin. In this product, theme and skin do not name two different package formats. The words come from different ways of describing the same visual change.

A Codex theme changes a supported workspace appearance
The theme package provides design data for a known theme ID and version. A fixed local engine maps that data to verified Home, conversation, and composer regions. It can set approved backgrounds, surfaces, foreground and secondary text colors, borders, and other allowlisted visual tokens.
The theme does not change the model, the content of a task, how tools run, or what the user can access. It is an appearance layer for supported Codex workspace regions.
Why people say both theme and skin
Theme is the more stable English category term. People use it when they talk about a dark theme, light theme, custom themes, or a theme switcher. The gallery therefore names each published item a Codex theme.
Skin often appears when someone means a more complete visual treatment or a skin pack. It is also part of the Codex Skin brand. Within the product, it is natural to say that a user applies a theme and then sees that skin in the current Codex window.
There is no hidden technical line between the two words. Both point to the same data-only publication and the same verified application path.
Theme artwork is one part of the theme
A wallpaper by itself is not a Codex Skin theme. Artwork is one declared image asset. The package also carries the structured information required to identify, verify, and render the theme safely.

= one published Codex themeThe manifest identifies the public theme ID and version, light or dark mode, allowed design tokens, region switches, compatibility fields, and asset hashes. The engine owns the layout templates, adapters, and verification rules. A theme package cannot replace those rules with its own code.
Theme detail pages show two related views when assets are available: the original artwork and an applied preview inside a fixed Codex workspace shell. The artwork shows the source image; the applied preview shows how the image and design data work with the surrounding interface.
What a theme can change
A current published theme can affect approved parts of the Home, conversation, and composer experience, including:
- workspace artwork or background;
- supported surface and card colors;
- primary and secondary text colors;
- borders and restrained accent tokens; and
- a matched native light or dark appearance baseline.
The exact coverage belongs to the current theme and engine version. Codex Skin does not promise that every native tool or utility surface will receive custom artwork. Native Sites, Scheduled, Plugins, settings, and right-side utility surfaces keep the paired official Codex palette rather than inheriting chat-specific styling.
What a theme cannot change
Theme packages cannot contain arbitrary CSS, JavaScript, Shell, PowerShell, selectors, executable files, symlinks, path traversal, undeclared files, or remote execution URLs. The package is checked against a strict content and asset allowlist before it reaches the apply stage.
A theme also cannot change Codex feature logic, network requests, account permissions, or security settings. Codex Skin does not patch the official .app, Windows package, app.asar, code signatures, or system-protected directories.
The supported surface is the Codex view in the ChatGPT desktop app. A Codex Skin theme does not style ChatGPT on the web, Codex CLI, an IDE extension, or a browser extension.
A published theme has an identity
Every published theme has a six-digit public ID, such as 100002, and a version. The public ID gives the gallery, Plugin request, delivery service, and visible verification one stable identity. A new version can update the content or compatibility data for that same theme without creating a different public ID.
Free and Pro are access levels, not different safety formats. A Free package and a Pro package both require an authorized device for delivery, pass the same signature and content checks, and must finish the same visible verification before the Plugin reports success.
The theme gallery and individual detail pages own each theme's name, preview, ID, version, access level, and related choices. This concepts page describes the shared format rather than duplicating the catalog.
Codex Skin is an independent third-party project
Codex Skin operates supported parts of the official Codex interface, but it is not an OpenAI feature and is not endorsed by OpenAI. It does not replace the official publisher or alter the distributed application package.
Codex can change over time. The Helper checks official application identity, loopback control, and the current interface capabilities before an apply. If it cannot confirm the required surface, it stops instead of guessing. That means a theme may need an update or may be temporarily unavailable after a Codex change. Offline Restore remains the path back to the saved official appearance.

Is a Codex skin different from a Codex theme?
Not as a package type in Codex Skin. Theme is the primary category term; skin is a natural alternative and part of the product name. Both refer to the same published, data-only format.
Is a theme just a wallpaper?
No. Artwork is one asset. A complete theme also has a manifest, approved design data, identity and version fields, asset hashes, and compatibility information. Fixed Helper-owned rules decide how it is rendered and verified.
Does Codex Skin change ChatGPT on the web or Codex CLI?
No. The current product targets supported Codex regions in the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows.
